Catholic Teacher Union [CTU] members were prepared to strike at four South Jersey high schools
October 17.
Following parent meetings the prior week, diocesan negotiators returned to the table
with additional salary increases totaling 1.25%.
The union Executive Board tentatively agreed to the additional increases and the
strike was avoided.
Union members ratified a four-year contract with salary increases of 4.25% for each of the
first two years, 4.5% for the third year, and 4.75% for the final year.
CTU members have walked strike lines in 1985, 1994 and 1997.
In those three strikes the union held meetings with parents after the strikes began.
Union officers decided to meet with parents prior to the proposed 2005 strike to garner
their support.
Parents put pressure on the diocese which responded with the new offer.
